Top cars 1960
Top Sports Cars of the 1960's
The 1960's produced some of the most beautiful, and -for their time - advanced driving machines ever. Their era is coming to a close. I had to sell my beloved 1969 BMW 2002ti because there was no way to meet emissions control regulations without gutting it. Plus, it got 8 miles to the gallon. Nothing like these cars will ever be seen again.
1. Ferrari 250 GTO
The Ferrari 250 GTO was a sports car that Ferrari made for racing in the early 1960s. The numerical part of its name denotes the displacement in cubic centimeters of each cylinder of the engine, whilst GTO stands for "Gran Turismo Omologato", Italian for "Grand Touring Homologated."
2. Porsche 911
The Porsche 911 (pronounced as Nine Eleven, German: Neunelfer) is a sports car made by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. The famous, distinctive, and durable design is notable for being rear engined like the Porsche-designed Volkswagen Beetle it had been based on. It was also air-cooled until the introduction of the all-new Type 996 in 1998. Since its introduction in autumn 1963[1], it has undergone continuous development.
3. Lotus Elan S1
Driven by Diana Rigg in the Avengers, among other notable accomplishments. Fiberglas body, pop-up headlamps.
4. Jaguar XKE
A classic!
5. Alfa Romeo Giulia Duetto
My vote for the Italians. This auto meets my highest test for styling: it looks like it is moving - fast - when it's standing still!
6. Sunbeam Tiger
British frame & body, Ford 260 V8 under the hood.
7. BMW 2800cs
8. Ford Mustang
First of the "Pony Cars", released in 1964. Quite the contrast with the euro models, eh?
9. Facel Vega Facel II
This is a big boy - rare now, but very popular in its day (especially in Hollywood!) Touted as the fasted 4 seat sedan of its day, it sported a Chrysler 383 V-8.
10. Shelby AC Cobra
A renowned British-US hybrid. The history alone is fascinating.
